Inmate Health Care
ODOC provides medical, dental, nursing, mental health, and pharmacy care for inmates at each state institution on site and/or through arrangements with local specialty service providers. ODOC employs more than 500 licensed health care personnel, certified and trained in their fields. Health Services operates under a team philosophy. All disciplines within each of the 14 facilities work closely together in order to reach a common goal, providing the best, most efficient, and cost effective health care possible.
Health care professionals and support staff within ODOC experience an array of medical interactions. They are responsible to provide care and services that meet the health needs of a widely diverse population in a closed and secure facility. A  registered nurse working within an ambulatory care clinic, following a patient that just completed a dose of chemotherapy treatment might next be asked to evaluate an inmate from general population who may be at risk for suicide. The staff have the opportunity to apply their nursing and critical thinking skills throughout their day. Staff often express their appreciation for these challenges which allow for professional growth and keep the working environment ever changing.
Nursing staff are estimated to engage in over 1,000 patient care contacts each day statewide. The Physicians/NP/PA staff are estimated to provide more than 250 on-site primary care appointments each day.
Medical Care Provided
Both federal and state constitutions as well as the courts have repeatedly held that inmates cannot be deprived of health care while in custody. The care provided must be comparable to the care available within the community. The health care team: provides preventative care, treats acute illnesses or injuries, works with inmates to manage ongoing care for chronic diseases, and provides end-of-life care.
