What are Community Action Agencies?
Overview
Community action agencies (CAAs) came into existence with President Johnson´s "War on Poverty" and the adoption of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964.
 
Community action agencies are local nonprofit corporations that provide a variety of programs for low-income residents, families and farmworkers such as preschool education, childcare related services, housing and energy assistance. Different agencies receive different kinds of funds; some funds allow a choice of activities.
 
Assistance programs include:
  • weatherization.
  • energy assistance.
  • housing rehabilitation programs.
  • minor home repair.
  • housing counseling.
  • emergency housing assistance.
  • job training.
  • emergency food.
