| What are Community Action Agencies? |
 |
|
 |
| Overview |
|
Community action agencies (CAAs) came into existence with President Johnson´s "War on Poverty" and the adoption of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964.
Community action agencies are local nonprofit corporations that provide a variety of programs for low-income residents, families and farmworkers such as preschool education, childcare related services, housing and energy assistance. Different agencies receive different kinds of funds; some funds allow a choice of activities.
Assistance programs include:
- weatherization.
- energy assistance.
- housing rehabilitation programs.
- minor home repair.
- housing counseling.
- emergency housing assistance.
- job training.
- emergency food.
